A fantastique concert finale (April 28, 2007) The BBC Philharmonic, and its extrovert chief guest conductor Vassily Sinaisky brought last night's "Gala Finale" concert in the Victoria Hall (Hanley) to a rousing finish with Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique..........
Lukas Vondracek, from the Czech Republic, gave a focussed and intense account of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini. The work, written in 1931, is the principal product of Rachmaninov's time spent on Lake Lucerne. As a teenager Vondracek is mature beyound his years both in technical ability and emotional expression. The orchestra provided virtuosic support throughout the 24 variations. It has become a tradition for soloists to play an encore and we were not disappointed with a somewhat long and unannounced offer, assumably by Rachmaninov. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
David Burrows.
