Prokofiev 1 with the Oxford Philomusica (April 18, 2002) Oxford Philomusica, conducted by Marios Papadopoulos at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford... The 15-year-old Czech pianist Lukas Vondracek proved an ideal choice for the work, his technique completely equal to its demands. At the time, this driving, four-movement 'modern scherzo' attracted the term 'machine-music', but Vondracek's playing recalled rather a perceptive critic of its first performance, who wrote that Prokofiev's piano "speaks in the stern and precise tone of the old-fashioned harpsichord". The intuitive lyricism with which Vondracek played the gentle Andante, however, made one realise why this gifted young pianist has found no less a teacher - and indeed conductor-colleague - than Vladimir Ashkenazy. His encore - a beautifully-played Liszt Transcendental Etude (no 8, the Wilde Jagd)- was particularly well-chosen ... Hugh Vickers in the Oxford Times |
